Wine making in New Zealand, Central Otago and Gibbston Valley

Our boutique vineyard is located in the Gibbston Valley , Central Otago , an alpine region in the South Island of New Zealand - the southern most wine-growing region in the world.

Outside of Burgundy , France and Oregon , USA , this is the best place to grow the Burgundy varieties. If you like the Burgundy wines - you will like our wines.

New Zealand

New Zealand is renowned for its stunning, clean, green landscapes. The landscape is also becoming acknowledged for producing highly distinctive award winning wines.

New Zealand wines have an individual style resulting from a combination of climatic conditions, geography and human innovation. Even within New Zealand there are a diverse array of styles, resulting from grapes growing in a range of climates and soils.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost winemaking region in the world and New Zealand's only wine region to boast a semi-continental climate. This provides the area with greater daily extremes of temperature.

The soil structure in Central Otago varies considerably from other regions with heavy deposits of mica and schists in silt loams.

"The wines of Central Otago have a purity, intensity and vibrancy that seems totally appropriate to anyone who has visited the region and breathed the pure mountain air" (www.nzwine.com).

Gibbston

Gibbston is located in the Gibbston Valley, Central Otago region and is known to have cooler and wetter conditions, consequently vines ripen later pushing back harvest dates. This slow ripening can enhance the build-up of colour and flavour, a blessing for the wine maker, but equally unseasonable frosts can bring heartbreak.
